What Are Implant Dentures?
Dental implants are titanium cylinders, sometimes referred to as posts, which serve as prosthetic tooth roots. Once they get surgically placed into the jawbone, they bond with the surrounding tissue. Therefore, they can act as an incredibly strong base of support for dentures. Implant dentures tend to be sturdier, longer lasting, and more reliable than conventional dentures.
Our practice offers two different types of implant dentures. During your consultation, we will recommend the one that we believe best fits your circumstances.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Fixed implant dentures, also known as hybrid prostheses, are permanently attached to the implants that support them. They can only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients enjoy the convenience of always having their teeth in their mouth. This type of restoration requires a healthy jawbone and may need 4 – 8 dental implants per arch.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures, sometimes referred to as “Snap-On dentures,” are easy for patients to remove on their own. They usually require fewer implants than fixed implant dentures, so they are popular among people who have lost some density in their jawbone.
The Implant Denture Procedure
The implant denture procedure involves four main steps:
- We will make sure you are a candidate for the procedure and start planning your treatment.
- Implant surgery. Our team will carefully insert the implants into your jawbone at precise, pre-planned locations.
- Over the course of a few months, your implants will bond with your jawbone. Then, we may place abutments (small connector pieces) on top of your implants.
- You will receive your beautiful new teeth.
The procedure can take several months from beginning to end, but the final results are well worth it!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
You may be a candidate for implant dentures if:
- You are missing all or most of your teeth throughout one of your dental arches.
- Your jawbone is strong enough to support dental implants.
- You are free of active gum disease and other oral health conditions that might adversely affect your new smile.
- You have good habits that will support the long-term success of your dental implants.
Even if you are not a candidate for dental implants right away, you might become one after some preliminary treatments.
